If you're Indian and under 22, you're probably a virgin. And when you do get round to doing it, you're more likely to take recourse to contraception, unlike your parents, a generation ago.
For, the average age at which Indians lose their virginity is 22.9 -- and teenagers between the ages of 16-19 having first sex are at least eight times more likely to have used contraception for their sexual debut than were people now aged 65 or over.
These and other facts were revealed in the 2007 Face of Global Sex Report released by Durex. However, the report also shows that for every year first sex is delayed — up to the age of 17 — contraceptives are more likely to be used, but from 18 onwards the rate of usage declines.
According to the report, Indians are second only to the Malaysians (23) when it comes to being the oldest to lose their virginity. Those in Singapore do it by the time they're 22.8, the Chinese wait till they're 22.1, Thais till 20.5, those in Hong Kong till 20.2, while the Japanese do it at a young 19.4 years.
The report also found that people who talk openly about sex and sexual health with their parents, other family members or with their partner are more likely to use contraception. Around 67.2% Indians are using some sort of contraception the first time they have sex.
Also, while only 26.8% desis felt ready the first time they had intercourse, 41.5% Malaysians (who wait the longest) feel ready by the time they actually get down to intercourse.
"The findings show there is still a need for youngsters to receive greater support through comprehensive sexual education programmes involving schools, health services and society at large, to enable them to plan better for their first sexual experience and to ensure they are equipped to make informed choices about contraception. Such sex education needs to work within a wider frame of emotions, love and relationships," says Peter Roach, VP, Durex Network.
Women, says the survey, are 25% more likely than men to take precautions when they lose their virginity. Conducted in 26 countries across all regions of the world, the survey attracted 26,032 responses in total, of whom 22,952 respondents were sexually active.
