This one is surely for the records -- 83-year-old Ratnakar Nath of Orissa's Sambalpur district has become the proud father of a baby girl. The baby was born to his 45-year-old wife Vilasmukhi last night at the district hospital and both of them are doing well, hospital officials said.
Hemant Kumar Panda, the doctor attending on the baby, has expressed surprise at the age at which Nath had become a father. "It is certainly a unique case. We have not seen a man above the age of 80 years becoming a father," he said.
Nath is a folk musician from Paramanpur village in Sambalpur district. He was widowed 22 years ago and has three daughters by his first wife. He later married Vilasmukhi, who already has a son and a daughter who was born a good 12 years ago. Vilasmukhi had a normal delivery and the baby girl weighs 2.5 kg.
Santosh Mishra, director of health services (nutrition) and a gynaecologist, said it was a rare incident though becoming a father even at the age of 90 was not impossible. "Since Ratnakar Nath is a folk musician, he must be physically fit. He must be walking and sweating it out every day which could have increased his inner strength," said Dhanurjay Das of Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.
